Here is another example of taking advantage of a serendipitous opportunity. In the Spring of 2014 I discovered a Robin had chosen the crook of a pillar of our pergola for a nesting site. I was able to get a photo of the eggs (such a beautiful “Robin Egg Blue” color!) outside. I then had the inspiration of chronicling the family’s beginnings by taking other photos at milestone moments. The other photos had to be taken from inside the house to avoid scaring the birds away. This required me shooting through a triple paned window at an angle, about 12 feet from the window. Even then you can see in the second photo the mother is a little wary of what is going on. Also, note the difference between the clarity of the photos when taken outside (eggs) vs inside (other 3 photos). The third photo of the hatchling being fed was strictly a lucky coincidence of being at the right place at the right time. This was also true of the last photo, titled “Launch Day.” The babies were gone shortly after the photo was taken. Such a fun (and lucky) photo project!
