It is difficult to get a good photo through the window of an Amtrak train moving at 70mph, but this one, taken as we were on our way to Whitefish, MT, was the exception. You can’t anticipate an approaching scene, and have only a split second to compose and snap the shot. We are looking north toward the Canadian border. I was pleased to get the “home on the prairie” just right of center, a fence in the foreground (a bonus that it is rickety), the great plains stretching off into the distant horizon, and a multi colored sky. What looks like dust in the air on the far right is actually smoke from the fires that raged in the west during the summer of 2017. You can faintly see a mountain on the horizon in the far left on the image, blurred by the smoke.
